Default lock and windows doesn't always work

Is this a common problem with 97 xj for the door module to go bad?

electrical gremlins are common on XJs. after 20 years you should expect some connections and wiring to fail. usually soldering the connections will fix your issue(s) as the window/door lock motors don't usually go bad. i have manual everything, so I can't help much from here, but remove your door panels and take a look for yourself.

here's a video i found by doing a quick google search

I have problems with the driver side door on my 97. The power windows won't work and the lock switch will unlock the doors but it won't lock them. I replaced the whole switch assembly and it still does the same thing. The power windows do work.

Wiring problems are typical. Usually it can be traced to a breakage between the door and the body. In the XJ, all of the power window functions are done by a module in the driver's door. Power locks are all done in the passenger door.

Go to www.cruiser54.com and look in the tech manual section, the FSMs contain wiring diagrams that will help you find which wire could be at fault.

I got it to where it will work most of the time, but sometimes it will still not lock or unlock, the engine running makes no difference. I still haven't got the mirrors to work.

Have you checked the loom for breakages? On my drivers door 95 XJ there is a point where 3 earth wires are joined together, this join had gone bad and meant my doors and windows didn't always work. All I did was remove the loom, renew the solder joint and refit.
