Default rear axle swap questions

on a c8.25 is it worth going from 27spline axles to 29 spline? the 27's are 3 1/2 inches longer, so does that matter? i have a open carrier in the rear right now and i was going to try to find a limited to slip to swap out with it. can i get a limited slip set up for 29 spline axles and just swap the 2 spider gears that the axles go into for the 27 spline axles? i am wondering this because one of the spider gears in my open carrier broke because i had to beat the center pin out and it was stuck on one. if i can swap them out it will give me the pieces i need later to put 29 spline axles in.

How big of a tire are you looking to run. A 27 spline 8.25 is not much weaker than a 29 spline. Two spline is not that big of a difference. Unless you are going to go big, in which case the 29 would prolly be too small anyway. If you are just looking for 31-33s, IMHO you'd be ok.

So can 29 spline axles be put in a rearend that originally had 27 spline axles since the 29's are shorter?

Where are you getting this info? IIRC, 27 & 29 splines are the same width, since they both come on XJs. If the 29 axle you are looking at is a different length, it could be out of a FS truck, and not an XJ. You would have to change the carrier as well, in order to put 29 spline shafts in your 27 spline housing. I have 0 experience with the 8.25 axles, so IDK if that will even work.

now you gotta pay to have it installed too... to pay someone to do that you may as well go back and buy a whole axle and you still would come out better... lol

if its more that $98 to have the carrier and stuff installed just buy a complete axle assembly and then you'll have extra shafts for when you break them and you can either keep or sell the carrier
