Light sockets. Correct parts?
 

1989 Jeep XJ 4.0 auto 4x4 124,000 miles.

Can somebody help me make sure I find the correct part.

I need the front two turn signal light sockets. They are plastic on mine.

I also am going to need some of the rear sockets. They are metal on mine.

These sockets grounds have been giving me issues for some time. Today I started messing with them. The front left turn signal ground was getting so hot it was burning me through the plastic, and the plastic was starting to turn black, so it's been doing this a while. Decided to cut the socket open as it is junk anyway. Yeah, the little flat plastic thing was rusted when I got it out. My left side also is giving ground issues and will only blink when I wiggle it correctly. Though it is not getting hot or anything.

I just decided to take out the front bulbs until I can replace these sockets.

My rear sockets give trouble with grounds as well but they are metal. None were getting hot. I have them all grounded enough now that the rear turn signals works if I flip the blinker arm up and down, which is ok for now. The backs are the most important and at least I can make them blink.

I am having trouble determing which plastic socket part I need to get/order, if I even can get them.

And also which metal socket to get/order, if I can even get them.

Has anybody ever ordered these? Thank you.

I got a 1990, probably the same lights. My hunch is all the square body XJs have the same sockets for lights, so up thru 1996 should work, as 1997 got the body changes, including different exterior light housings.

or you can look on ebay, good jeep parts I have got from ebay.

You may need to be patient if you want a used one from wrecker, or ebay, as some may not appear often. you got to wait till the right one shows up, so just keep lookkng on line every day,

Or bring the sample sockets to the autoparts store, R.V. or trailer supply place, or a collision repair/body shop, and see if they got a match. it maybe some common type may fit. or can be easily modified to fit perfectly.

Or at your computer, do an online web search for "images" or under "shopping " searches for trailer light sockets or 12 volt light sockets, automotive light sockets etc... look at the photos and see if any look like they might work for you.



you can in mean time solder pig tail wires on the bulb and connect to the wire harness plug in meantime. so long as you can hold the bulb in place, solder it will work. For long term repair, if you cannot fimd a socket, convert to LED so you wont ever have it burn out, no worry about easy of replacement of the bulb then, now you got a soldered permanent LED light bulb, brighter too then the old incandescent.

Id be most appreciative that if you do find a retail replacement that works, or can be made to work that you post it here, part number, brand, vendor or such so other with the squared body XJs know what to get.

They're actually quite generic. A NAPA store will have them.

Dorman #85830 is what you may need for the front.

I had no luck getting NAPA to recognize the Dorman number on by computer; so my advice is call whatever auto parts stores in your area and give them the Dorman number and ask them to check stock. If it not in stock how soon will it be available so you can look at it for a comparison to yours.

Did you try to interchange the Dorman number on the website or have somebody at the store do it?

Cause I just crossed the number on the Napa website and that is what came up.
And there is no reason that in the store a counter guy couldn't do the same.
I have probably mentioned this before but I worked at and retired from a Napa.
Was there 12 years but worked in back and delivered parts.
But I worked with some of the best counter guys in the business.
I picked up a thing or 2 from watching these guys.
While at my store I would have been an "eh" counter guy and a place like Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts I would have been a rock star.

OP needs to run down to Napa and buy one. Then, report back.
I never had to buy any of them. I had a 5 gallon bucket of used ones when I parted out XJs.

Chances are that is just a rebranded Dorman part anyway.
