Default Light power steering

The power steering on my 2001 Jeep cherokee Sport is so light that there is no road feel what so ever. Does this have something on it electronic that controls the pressure out put of the power steering pump? I don't know what to do & don't have a lot of money to spend on it, but we have to have it for daily transportation.

Default Light Steering

This is our 3rd Jeep in the last 8 years, 1st was a 96 sport 4 wheel drive, 2nd was a 2000 Grand Cherokee 4 wheel drive, this is our 1st 2 wheel drive & I worked for the state of Ky & wore out several new Jeep cherokee's. This the only one that the steering has been this light, it is like the old power steering on Mopars back in the 60's.

So when you turn the wheel is the truck turning like it should? or is it taking you more turning of the wheel to steer? Or is the steering wheel just really loose feeling? The track bar could cause the first thing I mentioned. Or there could be too much play in the steering box. You could try to adjust the steering box gears to make it a bit tighter....very simply by loosening the jam nut and tightening the screw in the middle on top of the box. Its a allen head screw. Some slop will occur in the box over the years but if the gears have worn out to much you may want to look into replacing it. While your down there check everything that has to do with steering, tierod, drag link, pitman arm, track bar, etc. Check the bushing and have a helper turn the wheel back and forth while you look for anything odd. Mater of fact really worn or over inflated front tires could cause that too.

I know this is an old thread, but thot to pipe in here cuz I had the same problem. Just stupidly light steering on a stock 96 Cherokee all steering components in good shape, caster 7 degrees. Great improvement had by changing out the old (but still good) stabilizer for a rancho which seems about twice as stiff. Also put new RL PS fluid in it with about 30% lucas steering "fixer" fluid, not sure if that helped but it's real thick and might take more hp to move it. Either way, the steering feel is way better now... not like a rig with variable power steering, but definitely livable, which it wun't before.
