Liftgate handle gasket (99)

I am replacing my liftgate handle. I notice there is a piece of rectangular rubber strip a few inches long and maybe 1/4" wide that fits into a recess across the upper rear edge of the lift gate handle assembly and sits against the liftgate body panel exterior. I don't see it listed in the parts catalog (SXJ-1310 section).

The strip on my XJ is bedraggled and hanging out....

Any ideas?

(may post a pic later)

Definitely the backup plan, but the material is weird, it is quite light... maybe because my XJ is a bit baked from a hot climate. I'll probably pull the handle out and make a template. I seem to excel at finding things that are not in the parts catalog....

I'll bet you aren't. I'm pretty sure you don't have a lift gate. I suppose somebody could have installed one aftermarket, but that would be pretty rare. Cherokees came with a rear hatch.

This is a lift gate:

Look up, "dumbing down". See also, "deconstructionism".

It doesn't matter how many idiots call it a lift gate (and everyone working at Merriam-Webster for at least the last decade is an idiot or worse), it's still not a liftgate.

Mopar made it, they call it a liftgate, good enough for me.

You are correct!
I also call it a lift gate.

Fresh from the Mopar Parts Catalog.

I myself wouldn't and don't call it a lift gate, I call it a hatch. But we all know what the op is referring to if he would've used either term

nujeepguy Jul 27, 2017 10:55 AM

its in the haynes index too but we all know thats never right!!

Cut length-wise and flatten a used mountain bike inner tube and trace the handle upside down with a razor blade. Use a thorn-resistant tube for a thicker seal.

BRM, dude... you're usually right on the money man, but just about every vehicle I've had or seen that has a "hatch" gets it referred to as a "liftgate" when looking up the FSMs, parts manuals, or even the user manuals. The struts for them are even called "liftgate struts" just about everywhere I've seen.

Are ya havin' a bad day?

Martlor13 Jul 27, 2017 08:18 PM

Ya know What s funny? There's literally a body style for cars called "hatchback" hah!! So confusion galore.

EEVEE Jul 27, 2017 08:30 PM

Depends for me, Technical i guess its a lift gate but who wants to say 2 words? hatch is easier, faster and simple in my mind. That extra 0.002 seconds matters.
