Default Left lights on w/ batt drain then motor won't idle on restart

'96 XJ here and I forgot and left my headlights on, so 45 mins later everythings totally dead at key turn. No interior lights, nothing.

Get a jump and the 4.0 only starts when I give it a little gas. Had to two foot it for a while b/c the motor would die if I wasn't giving it at least a little gas. After reaching around 50 mph the motor seemed to be ok and I could single foot it again at stop signs etc.

Next day start it up and back out and it dies again. So same thing, tendency to die at stop signs unless foot on the gas. So I get up to around 50 again and it starts to act normal again.

So what's happening here? Did the batt drain reset the computer or something and now it's learning how to idle again? Is there anything I can do to help it learn faster?

Dude, if you drain your battery you need to hook it to a charger, charge it, then see if it holds a charge. If the battery is good then use a multi meter to check the alternator while it's running.

.I happen to have a bootleg 96 FSM, with no directory. So I couldn't find the instructions to the teck returning a Jeep. IIRC it's a 20 minute drive with multiple starts and stops. Somewhere here on CF 40 was mentioned before it's no doubt done.

Not really knowing squat, if it were me I'd leave the neg batt terminal off 6 hrs or overnight. I wouldn't want to "1/2 crash" the puter'. With a fresh re-boot, (with no nagging memory), maybe it'll get it's S straight. Then if it doesn't. look for the issue.

What I'm suggesting is to leave the PCM powered down long enough to loose all it's memory. Start fresh with a clean slate. If it was just partly, but not completely reset it might be confused. Something easy enough to rule out.

There was someone else on here a few days ago that had a similar problem. Fist of all do like Crawdadslim said. Charge you batter and have it load tested. A bad or weak battery will cause many problems and stalling out is one of them. The charging system on vehicles will not charge a completely dead battery.
