Leaky Transmission
 
My 96 XJ is leaking ATF at a steady and stream and has a knock from the flex plate, is there anyway to truly figure out where the leak is coming from? Is it the filter, Torque Converter, or a seal? I've put Blue Devil Seal Repair through it, and it seemed to slow the leak, but not stop it.

Where is the external leak visible?

Good luck after adding this sealant to the transmission.

Just grab a rag and wipe anything down that looks suspect, and keep checking it.

These are probably separate issues. The flex plate bolts get loose and you get a ticking. If it's a KNOCK, it may be too late to save it. You need to look at that.

The filter is just a screen, and can't actually leak anywhere. It would have to be coming from the front or rear seal, or the pan gasket, or the overflow tube (because you overfilled it).

Clean things up and do some looking!

a flex plate knock creates play which most likely worn the front pump seal out which caused a leak. even worse it may have damaged the pumps ears.

This topic shows my loose flex plate.

In my case I stopped using the vehicle, except for very short duration running at idle for diagnosis purposes.

In my case the transmission pump was fine, the torque converter was fine and the flex plate was fine.

The flex plate to crankshaft bolts could have possibly been reused. The torque converter bolts could definitely have been reused. Both sets of bolts were replaced w/ NOS Mopar bolts. The crankshaft bolts arrived pre-treated w/ red Loctite. The torque converter bolts were treated w/ Loctite prior to assembly.

Now all is good again.
