Leaf Springs

Ok so I got my AAL kit and installing it tomorrow. My orig. leaf springs are shot. Should I get a beafier spring from a s10 and just not add the AAL or use the AAL and get used OEM springs? What is everyone's opinion. I want to be able to carry a load w/o it sagging in the back so bad.

The Rooster 01-30-2013 03:51 PM

tkeehn 01-31-2013 05:50 AM

ok so should I get something beefier like from an s10 or go with stock OEM Cherokee springs?

Nakedginger 01-31-2013 10:58 AM

Its up to you. I went with Dodge Dakota leaf springs. It ended up giving me a 4.5" lift and I can carry gear and not worry about the rear end sagging down. It wasnt that hard of a mod.

The Rooster 01-31-2013 11:18 AM

Make it simple on yourself just get the oem replacements that are hd and call it a day...

salad 01-31-2013 11:43 AM

If you've already purchased a lift kit with an AAL, replace the leafs in there now with new stock OEM Cherokee springs. The 'bastard packs' with S10 or Dakota springs are for building lifts without a commercial AAL kit.

Man I was hoping to not spend much more money. All the New springs are about 200 a piece! Unless you guys know of somewhere online cheaper?

VTJeep 01-31-2013 12:44 PM

Quadratec. Look into OME leafs. Nets you 2" and are well worth the money. My two Lincoln's.

Thanks those are not bad. I forgot about quadratec even though I get their magazine. I'll have to order some when I get paid again. Thanks again for the help.

This is a even better deal.

If you are low on cash, you can still get the S-10 packs, just don't install all the leafs. Sell the AAL's to someone else.
Does that sound like an alternative solution to others here?

Nakedginger 01-31-2013 03:37 PM

Yep, its just a choice of which way to go. I didn't have a ton of money to blow so I went with the "bastard pack."

I was wondering about this myself. Not too much cash right now but my XJ needs a butt-lift without too much lift (maybe an inch or two just to level it back out or give it the ever so slight hint of rear to front tilt), if you get my meaning. My stockers are even slightly curved downward right now. Put 100 pounds in the back and my headlights are coon hunting!

modelcar 01-31-2013 11:41 PM

You could always try and heat them up and hammer the curve back into them! It's doable with simple tools......and a lot of manual labor! That's even cheaper (maybe even free if you already have access to the heat required) than the other options here, just don't forget your hearing protection, you'll need it! :)

I have all and then some to perform this activity but dayum! I'd rather drop the few bucks on a set of junkyard s-10 springs and see how things pan out...lol.

modelcar 02-01-2013 12:19 AM

I hear ya....just figured I'd throw it out there since you were looking on a budget!

97country4x4 02-01-2013 12:42 PM

I also doubt that much heat would be good for the structure of the spring steel...would probably ruin the integrity.

modelcar 02-01-2013 02:08 PM

It's fine as long as you do it properly. It's actually less hammering than I insinuated, but loud nonetheless. The trick is to heat and cool the metal to retain the proper molecular structure.

Maybe if you're a metallurgist or blacksmith. Average DIYer with a torch will probably either harden or embrittle it.

Ditto!

I just replaced my OEM springs with Dorman 929-301 springs and it sits perfectly! Do it once and do it right!

OutBurst 02-01-2013 03:32 PM

There you go, best price shipped anywhere. Includes bushings and everything. Stock height - my Cherokee sits at 31.5" at all four corners.

tkeehn 02-04-2013 07:14 AM

Well since I was in a hurry to do the lift I worked with what I had. I had a friend offer to put them in a press and add alittle arch back to them. It sits level with the front. I have not put much weight in the back yet. I also have to figure out if I want a new bolt on hitch or a bumper with a receiver built in, I like the bumper idea. Might make it in a few months. Thanks for the help, I'm looking at the HD quadratec springs if I get new ones. I sit at 35" perfect at the top of all four wheel wells.
