last minute pcm panic

So i have an offer from a dude to buy the PCM out of the White Knight, my parts xj, and it got me thinking about my main project, Black Bertram.

It's a CA xj per the VIN, but when i bought it it seemed to have federal emissions junk but still CA (?) PCM.

What is CA emissions (exhaust) for a 98?

Mine has:
2x O2 sensors, one on the header, one before the cat. It doesn't have those funky multi-part headers either, just a standard 6-1.

I'm planning on taking the near identical exhaust line from the 96 White Knight XJ, but didn't know if that will work.

Should I keep the 96 PCM (p/n P56041)? Or sell it?

Both are AT

The 2000 and the 2001 xj have 3 o2 sensors . you should be ok .

Groovy. Thanks for clarifying. With all the other crap I'm running into is nice to know I won't have to screw around with that.

You sure about that?

2000 has either 2 or 4, depending on federal or CA emissions. 2001 has 4.

For some reason I thought that '97 was when they went to 4 O2s and the split header for CA... good.

But that makes sense it was '00 with the new coil-on-plug design.

opps I said they have 3 o2 sensors I meant 4 o2 sensors , sorry for the mistake . 2000 and newer have the split exhaust with the 4 o2 sensors . I think yours is a 1998 it should have 2 o2 sensors so the only difference between ca and fed is the programming . all the sensors are the same .

All OBDII prior to 2000 have 2 sensors.

2000 federal emissions has 2 sensors. 2000 CA emissions has 4 sensors.

ALL
2001 have 4 sensors.

OK , I know I worked on a 2000 xj with federal emissions and I could swear it had 4 o2 sensors I remember the xj because it had problems passing it's smog test and one of it o2 sensors was a little on the slow side . but maybe i'm wrong . but this post was about a 1998 xj .

I understand he has a '98. You're the one that brought the '00 and '01 into the discussion and I'm just trying to set the record straight for folks who read this thread in the future. I drive a federal emissions 2000 XJ that has the factory original drivetrain in it, and it has 2 O2 sensors and no precats. I can point to several other posts from '00 owners who state this as well. The graphic I posted above showing the different O2 configurations from federal to CA are from the 2000 FSM.

Were there some 2000 XJs with federal emmissions that had 4 O2 sensors? Maybe, but many of them don't, and I've not seen one that does.

Ok that makes seance because like I said I worked on one . I live in California so I don't see may with federal emissions . Thanks for the info
