Just trying to get some stuff figured out.
Alright so I got a ride in a guys super tricked out jeep cherokee. It was something from the 90's but it was all kitted. I would like to try and do something like this with a cherokee but I'm completely new to this and I don't even know where to start. First things first what should I start off with for my base? Which year? are there any sub models that are particularly good. Basically I want to start with a roof rack and lights on that. I want to do a lift and I want to put a few more upgrades aswell as cosmetic upgrades. This jeep will be my daily driver as well as my fun to mess around off road car. So where should I start? What base model and what upgrades would you start out with. I'm also going to be dropping a full sound system at about 1200 watts total as well as some electrical upgrades(1/0 wire, second battery, maybe a high output alt). Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Try to make sure whatever Cherokee you get DOES NOT have the Peugot 5 speed transmission or the Dana 35 rear. Unless your area gets a LOT of snow, I would go with the NP231 transfer case. Make sure its not rusty underneath, and check the frame for stress tears/cracks. If it has high miles, check the oil pressure. Get the 4.0L engine (the 2.5L is a great motor, but the 4.0L is much stronger). Other than that, pick whatever you like. They are reliable vehicles and will last 250K+ miles with a little maintanence.
I like the 97-later bodystyles and interiors better, but the 96-prior models have more aftermarket parts available. Mine has keyless entry (very nice addition), and I wish it had an overhead console. Towing package is always a plus. Try to find a little old man with one for sale that has been babied (thats what I did). Pay a little extra to get a nice one with low miles, good paint, good interior. You'll be thankful for it later.
This is a great forum, with many helpful members. Good luck and have fun with it.

Makarov said it pretty much right. 00 and 01 are 2 years to stay away from if possible. They had head issues and also got the low pinion front axle. I used to have a buyers guide link. I'll see if I can find it.
@ Makarov, LOVE the signature! That makes 2 of us for sure!
