Hey, I honeslty know basically nothing about Jeeps, I just bought a 99 Cherokee, I have seen pictures of the Jeeps on this website and would like to do a lift on mine. I Like how the 4.5 inch lift looks. The thing is I live in NYC and am probably never going to go off roading. What would be a good lift just to get it up?

rustys kits are i think cheapest on the market and if you dont want to really start extreme rock crawling you wont need any armor or skid plates. ide start with this kit. and slap on some 32's. if you want to stand out a little more get some sand paper and a few cans of blat black and give it a two tone paint job up to the lowest body line(about 8 inchs from bottom of body)

Rough Country is also a great source for reasonably priced lifts
if your rear springs aren't sagging too much an AAL (and maybe shackles) will do the trick for you
short arms are fine on road, but longarms do give you a better ride quality
more than likely you will need a 1 or 2" t-case drop (IRO has a 1" for like $30)
you will however notice a slight loss in power if you go to a 32"+ tire
oh and i live out just west of rochester in case you decide you ever want to try her out in the mud lol

There are several lift kits available for the XJ, just depends on how much you want to spend. A long arm kit will ride better but cost more money. Keep in mind that if you lift it 4.5", you'll probably want to do an SYE to eliminate rear driveline vibes. Also, depending on what size tire you want to run, you may want to regear the axles to bring your horsepower and MPGs back into stock range. Here are some examples of 4" and 4.5" kits for the XJ from some of the more well known companies out there;

I agree that 4"+ requires more money/work to do right
a Rough Country Series II 3" kit w/ full leaf packs seems like the best deal you will find....that with some 31x10.5's will give you a stance that will stand out

I'm on LI and have a 98 Classic. I don't go off-road much either. I painted the wheels black and went with a 2" budget boost and I like it. I plan on trying to squeeze some 31s on it when the time comes for new tires. It's higher, but not too high. I'm actually gonna get some nerf bars cuz it's a little high for my wife getting in. she's 5'4"

Sorry I'm new to the lift lingo, but what is a 2" budget boost? Obviously its a 2" lift but how did you do it? I have a stock 98 and I put 15X8 rims and with my rear leaf springs sagging like crazy my new tires rub on the plastic fenders whenever I get too much weight in my jeep or hit a bump. Is there anything I can do to lift up the back end without having to change brake lines or whatnot.

budget boost means its cheapely done, u put in coil spacers and longer shocks. its no different then a wrangler and a body lift. rustys is chaeper then rough country and rustys ive heard just doesnt flex as much but that wont mater for you. ther are too many cherokees with 3 inch lifts and 31's around here! they look more common then the stockers. there are some around here with at least 6 if not 8

why put all the money into a nice 4.5" lift and not wheel it?...i hope you have deep pockets to do that.
not bein an a$$, just sayin. for a 4.5" lift it will most likely require a lot more (sye, regear, etc). i'd keep it a little simpler if it's just gonna be driven on pavement.
