just got a free jeep! but it wont start now. please help!

Default just got a free jeep! but it wont start now. please help!

hi everybody im new to the site, my co-worker gave me her 86 cherokee laredo and i went to start it for the first time since she told me it broke down, and it started right up! then died! now it wont start. so the check engine light is on and it wont start. where do i test the cel at? ps iv never worked on a carborated engine b4. anything will help!! thanks guys!

what motor is in it? I would start with looking at all your fluils first if you havent already. Then a compression check.

i really dont know anything about jeeps. all i saw is that its a v6..

do they still have a ecu in that year? If so, cant you get it scanned for trouble codes. especially if its throwing the CEL.

Im not sure about jeeps (yet) but the plug ins I have seen in dif vehicles are either under the hood, under the driver side of the dash or under the ashtray (thats in a 2003 Acura)

its an 86 so its renix and if it was it'd be obd1 and i think autozone only does obd2

not sure if it will work on an 86 but there is a trick you can do with cycling the key thru the ignition and counting some flashes on the CEL, i would suggest gettin a haynes or a chiltons manual it will have that trick in there and tons of other usefull info esp trouble shootin guides for why it may not be starting

O reileys can do the jeep back to I think 84ish. It is the obd1

the 86 is the last year for the GM 2.8...thats whats in there...ive never worked on one of those
