just bough an 88 xj pioneer
so i bought it for 500. it runs and slightly over heats. it has big horn tires on off road rims. it is tinted and dent free, but when i took it out to drive it i put it in first gear and it is stuck in first. I called the guy and he told me sorry and that he had forgetten to tell me not to use first. Apparently i can take the shifter and and stick a screw driver down there to shift it out. I know i got ripped off but i signed the title and want to know what to do. Is it a linkage problem do you think or is the tranny just toast?

Sounds like something is holding it in first so idk i guess it could be either linkage or something internal.. Let me just ask to clarify is it a 5 speed? Another question, why did you buy a vehicle without driving it first? You'll have to wait all weekend for this but tuesday take it to a shop or get down and dirty and drop the tranny and see whats going on

There isnt shifter linkage. The shift lever goes right into the top of the trans.

well i can pick up an ax15 for 50 bucks. and im so bored and had money to blow so oh well gives me something to do. i now have two jeeps haha. I would imagine it would be easier to just swap trans. and its a 5 speed.

haha thats bunk man! uhm possibly tommorow. i have one more full day of work, then i have 3 days to play with it and rip it apart in my garage! oh and i want to put my steering column from a 1993 in it would it work?

cool deal! im excited to get busy with it! i definetally like my 91 more though haha. its got the H.O gotta love that. but then again itc because its matte black with 31's 4 inch lift, a safari rack, limo tint, a bumpin system and much more. I feel like im cheating on it haha.
