Jeep xj windshield question

Can I replace a 96' xj windshield with a windshield from a 92'?

Jor2010dan 05-17-2011 10:54 PM

Yes sir. I work in the glass business, and every xj from 84-2001 has the same windshield. The one thing that none of them have is the right mirror bracket. I have every jeep up till 97 come in and I put the correct bracket on. If you were close to Southern utah I'd have you come in and I could help ya out!

Thanks for the reply. Any specific procedure to taking out the windshield on the 92 and the 96? I noticed the 92 has aluminum trim around the windshield and the 96 has rubber.

Hmm I don't think you can harvest a windshield that's already installed. Don't get me wrong, I've tried for customers but the windshield is the one you can't usually remove without braking as it isn't tempered glass, its laminated. What you can do, which will take some patience, is taking a razor knife and carefully cut out the urethane from the inside of the Jeep. As for the trim, I have a 92 with the aluminum and when I changed my windshield I went to rubber. I don't think you can use aluminum for yours. If you pull up on your rubber moulding and see little round projecting studs pointing at the windshield you could get clips and switch to the aluminum.
But overall I think this maybe something you have to end up taking to a shop.

I had my windshield replaced at a shop and they cut out the old one without damaging it so yeah it can be harvested if done correctly.

As I recall he cut the molding away from the windshield, they used a tool that he got behind the glass and just pulled it along cutting away from molding from behind the glass. Pulled the windshield right out and then went about prepping the flange for the new windshield.

I think having the proper tool is the key to a successful pull, it was sort of a hooked knife with a wooden handle that he pulled along.

Reminded me of one of those Ice Skate lacing pullers, except the end was a blade instead of a round hook.

OH and by the way .... the gasket/molding cannot be reused, gotta get a new one.

Cost for me to have it replaced was $185 at an independent shop - big nationwide chain wanted almost $300.00.

Yea I was asking because I got a 96' Cherokee that needs some work. I have a 92 that is going to be my parts truck. I should be able to use most anything off the 92 since it's got the same body style and almost all the same parts
