jeep wiring question

Well i posted before. When i the jeep it had no dash lights or domes. so we started to invesigate . No fuses in instrument panel and dome. So i tester out and had power to the fuse block at instrument panel. So we threw a fuse in and turned on head lights. And she started smoking under dash. And now we have no power at fuse panel at instrument spot. We put a fuse in for dome and they worked for a bit. And now they dont but fuse is good.......wtf

What year XJ?

Is it manual? The master could be leaking onto the fuse block under the dash.

Its a 92 and its a auto

It has power to instrument slotvin fuse box again. A little bit ago it was dead after we tried a fuse in it. Could the fuse block have a short?

It could.. Especially if it's causing a jeep fire. If its easy enough for you Ide try and pull a fuse block from the boneyard.. Although if it's other wires that are shorted you might get the same result.

I remember my 91 had all types of crazy things going on when my buddy wired my radio wrong.. Ex: I had dome lights when the key was set on acc ONLY but I did not even have a fuse In the dome light slot! And my dash lights were all screwy also among other very weird symptoms. For whatever reason Jeep decided to wire a lot of the dash power together through many other circuits rather than just directly like one would reasonably assume. I wish I still had my wiring diagrams for that XJ, I only got em for a 98 now. Not sure if this helps you at all but just sharing experiences.

Yeah mine worked without a fuse. They come on if i roll up pass side rear window and hold the button up....not sure where to start or even try to.....everything works except dash lights and i lose the radio light when i turn on head lights the previous owner wired up small blue lights abd set them in the cluster so i do have light. Just bugs me its not right

I bet its using the radio light signal wire for the dash light.. If this was me, Ide pull the dash cover off, remove everything that's not stock (should be easy to see) remove the (after market?) radio and start tracing. For some reason a blue with red tracer sticks in my mind as a power wire. Also inspect the head light switch.. Wouldn't surprise me either if they tapped into the main light switch as a feed for the blue lights. Ugh i hate redneck wiring jobs..I always seem to experience them first hand too lol. Either way im sure it's not as bad as it seems and a little investigation should point you right to the problem.

check the underhood light for a short

xjmafia 02-10-2012 09:18 PM

Underhood light works as it should

I had a similar prob. My dome would come on then blow. I took the bulb out og the dome and everything worked. My dome was bad. Not saying that is your prob but I beat my head several times trying to figure it out. Hope this helps.
