86 had a 207 transfer case as memory serves, if so i'm not sure that the splines are the same as the 231. If they are did you get a jy case or a rebuilt case.

wow, that blows!

what about the input shaft? i've heard about some people replacing the transfer cases, but have the wrong input shaft length, and it results in what you are describing.

yeah, and just did a double check on this as well, it was either an NP207, NP228, or NP229.

Default Transfer Case

Bummer.. It does kinda sound like no engagement between the tranny output shaft and the tcase input shaft. Did you compare them prior to installation? Also did you spin the input shaft and output shafts to make sure everything worked prior to install? Hopefully its something easy but there is a lot of info out there particularly on input gear spline count and the length of the shaft as well. You can narrow it down a lot from the tag number info on the transfer case. That will give you the date of manufacture and the assembly number. With that info you can check the interchangeability with one of the on-line part number guides (i.e. what assy number used in what year, what tranny, etc)

That 5 speed has 21 splines. You probably have a 23 spline transfer case input so the tranny shaft is just spinning inside. You can buy a new gear for the tcase, but it will set you back $200. You better pull it and exchange it if you can. I might have my old tcase still. I am cleaning out the shop now and may stumble across it. Anyway, I can't remember getting rid of it. If I can find it, I will give it away.

I think I had read somewhere that if the tranny is in gear when putting the t case back on that you won't be able to pull it out of gear, or visa versa.
