Default Jeep stopped moving on the road

I (after 2 years of on and off messing with it) was finally able to take my 1989 xj down the road. After a quarter mile, something happened and it turned sideways and went off the road. I wasn't able to move it in 2 wheel drive, but it drove back home in 4. It jibed hard to the right and pretty much stopped. When I got home, I put it in low, it made a loud popping sound and started to move in 2 wheel drive, but making a clicking sound. Any ideas? I need to hack it up and see what the rear end is doing.

sounds like something gave way in the rear end. Assuming Dana35. I would pop the cover and take a look.

It almost seems it, was like it was bound up and low range popped it free again

Where's the clicking sound coming from?

I'm not quite sure, I had to leave for work for the week. I'm now wondering if it was one of the rear brakes.
