I have a 1988 Cherokee 4.0 automatic transmission. The jeep started to leak fluid so I pulled the radiator and it was riddled with holes. I got a new one put it in added coolant and drove it around. The coolant gauge says it was over heating so i drove it home and parked it. I went out side the next day checked coolant level and was empty so i added more and the same problem exist I did this a few more times and it got better but when I let it idle it would get way hot but at the same time when i accelerate it will cool down. Any one know what the problem is???
Also I need to add new transmission fluid what kind and how should I add it.
thanks for help !!!!

when you replaced the radiator did you replace the hoses, thermostat and the rad cap. whenever your dealing with an overheating problem it is a good idea to replace everything. It's not expensive and it will eliminate those parts if your still overheating. if your overheating while at a stand still your fans my be your problem; have you checked them to see if there operating properly?
try this .......http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/...BurpAirMod.htm
also drilling the thermostat is said to help it burp air out. A small 1/8 hole at 12 and 6 seems to work fine.
See the pic in post # 23 for example. I dont like the 4 holes as pictured, 2 should do fine.... https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/my-...x2/#post238301

Sounds as though your fan clutch is working but you can check it by getting the engine to operating temp, shutting it off and then trying to spin the fan by hand. It should be pretty hard to spin, if it spins easily then it needs replacement. Your electric fan will only come on with the AC on or if the coolant temp reaches over 237(?)F with the key on/engine running. Sounds like this could be part of your issue at idle but you will also have to "burp" the system. There are multiple threads on here on how to do it with the closed system you have. Cherokees are prone to overheating.
