Default jeep question

Hey guys, got a problem. Have an 89 XJ 4.0 5 speed. When backing up or leaving in first the jeep stalls. It shakes and i have to feather the gas to get going from a dead stop. After i get going everything runs smooth, including shifting. It just seems like all this happens at the point of taking off. Is it clutch? Any advice would help.

Are you trying to take off from a dead stop without pushing on the gas at all?

Or is it having problems as you give it some gas on take off?

Problems when i'm giving it gas. I have to feather the throttle to keep it from stalling and the jeep shakes letting out the clutch and giving it gas. If I let out the clutch normally and give it gas it stalls or shakes when leaving from a stop sign or light.

Throttle position sensor caused a similar symptom in my old 92 4.0. Replaced the sensor for $30 and it went away. Google it and see if it sounds like the problem you're having.

When has it had new plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

Throttle body cleaned along with IAC?

Intake manifold bolts snugged up?

Engine vacuum harnesses intact?

Don't go chasing sensors right off the bat.

All those things Cruiser mentioned are considered as part of a real tune-up.
In the old days, folks replaced points & plugs & thought it was a tune-up...not true by a long way..

New plugs, needs wires, cap, rotor. Throttle body and iac cleaned last week. Vaccum harness intact and all bolts tight. Drove this morning and it ran fine, except the small jerks shifting into second and third.
