jeep died while driving

so i was driving home and my jeep just died (while driving). had plenty of gas all the gauges were good, it just died. i tried to jump it off from a friends car and no luck (using actual jumper cables not booster cables). 30 minutes(ish) later it started right up and i managed to get it back to my house. last week my buddy didnt shut my hatch all the way and the battery completely died. i was able to jump it off then with no issues. i think that may have something to do with it. as of right now im thinking either battery, or alternator.
specs 2000 xj, I6, auto, no engine mods, no electrical mods, literally bone stock down to the paper filter.

Thoughts?

when it died you had power still, headlights ect?

yea still had power to everything. tach dropped to 0 rpm but other than that still had everything including speedo, and the rest of my gauges

Did the motor turn over normally with out the jumper cables connected?

yea there was no difference in the "sound" of the starter when i had the cables on or off.

Ok that means battery and alt no the issue ,could be crank sensor, cam sensor or fuel filter/pump causing the shut down .

oh more background not really sure if itll help at all.
lets see 2 weeks ago i pulled my buddies dually about a half mile. last weekend i did drive through some larger puddles of water (about a third of the way up the tire). today the radiator boiled over (never did get an overtemp light, gauge never went above the mark above 210). thats really about it jeep has been acting fine after "all" that.

when i was trying to start it the battery gauge was only reading 12 volts though. not sure if any of that matters horribly.

i do occassionally get misses but i had assumed it was the tsb for the number 3 cylinder vapor locking.

any way to test the crank sensor or the cam sensor?

freegdr Jul 14, 2012 04:03 AM

I would get it scanned for codes see if you get any that have to do with crank or cam sensor issue ,water up third of the way on tire wont casuse a stalling issue as for boil over have cooling system pressure checked including radiator cap.

It very hard to test things when xjs running when it wont start is when testing works best but this never happens when you want it not to start rule of thumb...lol...
