Default Finally got a jeep!

Ever since I was 5 years old I have wanted a XJ. My father had a Cherokee Pioneer and I absolutely loved it but sadly we had to sell it when we moved from B.C to Nova Scotia. So yesterday I sold my car and bought a 1990 Jeep Wagoneer XJ! I love the Full Time 4wd and the comfy seats and riding up high. It runs pretty good and has 190k km's on it. I have all kinds of questions though I want to off road a bit on it and I was wondering what the different kind's of 4WD are on the Select-Trac. also how does the heater work what are the settings for. I bought the jeep off an older couple in there sixtys and they had it since new it was a highway car. I am so happy and coming from a RWD Mazda the full time 4wd is awesome. Please be easy on me I'm new to 4wd If anyone has tips and tricks please post them. I think the lever for the 4wd is hard to pull up and It only goes in part time or fulltime I can't pull the lever to the 4Lo setting

Thanks!

Zac

congrats, welcome to the forum. the best thing is to read your owners manual on the four wheel drive. 4 lo is for off pavement only. and you need to have the trans in nuetral then pull the lever while stopped, or barely moving. if the old couple never used it, it may be difficult.

lets see some pics.

If I had a Camera I would it has the fake wood paneling and wine colored paint. The older couple never really used the 4wd so yes the shifter is a bit hard to pull up on but it seems to be getting better with use. so when putting the vehicle in 4Lo you put it in neutral while not moving. I just tried that and with a bit of hard pulling I got the lever at the low setting. I do not have the manual only a bunch of brochures the owner still has the manual and it is in their shed buried in a box somewheres. Is it safe to put the Jeep in fulltime 4wd while moving or should I stop and put it in neutral for any of the settings

Thanks

Zac

full time you can shift on the fly, while moving. 4 lo is the one thats different.

Ok thanks man. I think I am replacing the front drivers fender because it has a dent in it and its a bit rusty I have been told its not very difficult to do. so far i love my jeep although I wish I knew what 4Lo was when I was going up this little trail behind my friends house and got the jeeps front wheels in a icey muddy stream and the back wheels on snow covered ice. man we had my sisters boyfriend pushing and my sister in the hatch to rock the jeep out had I known about 4Lo I wouldn't have had to do that I think

in my experience, 4lo dosent do much in snow. usually when i get stuck in the snow, and especially ice, it is because i cannot get the traction needed. i generally am so stuck i have to be pulled out. Usually my tires just kick out the snow under them and i am already burried to the unibody rails!

Always remember, 4 wheel drive WILL NOT HELP WITH STOPPING ON ICE OR SNOW!!! it will help alot to get started though!

have fun, and experiment with what 4wd will and will not do before you get comfortable with it!

Yes i know my dad tells me that as well and I know just because you have 4wd doesn't mean you can drive faster or stop faster but If you drive safely you have a better chance of maintaining control. I was stuck with one wheel in the stream with a rock keeping it from moving the rear wheels were crooked on the ice. How ever with some playing with the steering and my sister in the hatch bouncing and my sisters boyfriend pushing the drivers side we got out. I was surprised the back wheels were on ice and the front wheels one was on the ice and the other in a muddy stream with the rock lol
I really like this car. Compared to my mazda which was great but awful in the snow with rwd and a v6. All of the spots I frequent where the car got stuck the jeep didn't even spin the tired in 4wd i always knew I wanted one of these and I love it as much as I thought I would!
