Jeep Cherokee Sport 2000 AC Compressor
 

Just bought a badass jeep Cherokee sport and the only thing that is wrong with it is the AC...it works for the first 5-10 minutes when I turn it on, but then blows out warm air. I don't want to completely replace it because that is out of my price range right now. I have read some stuff regarding the shims and if removed how they will add some life to the compressor. Does anybody know if that works? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Does the clutch stay engaged on the compressor the whole time?
May just need to recharge the a/c

could need a charge or over charged get a cheapie fill gauge and 134a bottle ( like a/c pro)and hook gauge to the low side. set the arrow to what ever the outside temp is and add or remove Freon till the gauge reads in the lower part of the proper zone. DO NOT OVER CHARGE!!!. better a little low then too much.
ALSO
when the air blows out warm check if one of the a/c tubes under the hood is real cold or both warm. If one is real cold and one is warm then you may have a vacuum leak and your blend door is not working properly

Tap the clutch next time it kicks off see if it kicks back on if so remove thinnest shim . If its cycling on and off low Freon would be main suspect .

It has already been recharged. I got that done a couple weeks ago because I thought that was the problem. It is still going in and out of cold air/warm air. When the car has sat out in the sun for a while sometimes the ac won't ever even get cold. I will try some of those suggestions though. Thanks!

When you had it recharged did it work right then or did it only work for the 5-10mins also? If it work right when you had it charged up you may have a slow leak in the system.

After getting it recharged it did the same thing. 5-10 minutes of cool air, and then it would blow out warm air. It never fully worked, just did the same thing it was doing before...

Could be your compressor clutch not engaging when hot. Mine does the same thing. Blows fine but when hot (90 degree day, in traffic) it'll disengage and blow warm. It's a sign of a worn out clutch plate causing the magnet to not engage.


I'm going to try this when my clutch removal tool arrives in a couple of days.

When you did the recharge was your compressor short cycling? If so then it probably didn't charge correctly because the compressor wasn't running enough to suck in the freon. You'll have to jumper some connections on the compressor harness to get it to engage and continue to run.

Yes, I have recently watched this video. After speaking with my mechanic and with all of who posted's help- I really think that the clutch in my compressor is just nearing the end of its life. I am going to remove a shim from the clutch because there have been a lot of people saying that it will give it a little bit more life! Hopefully it works! Thanks for the help...

Should just do on board air much more useful. Can run air tools and fill your tires after you're done trail riding.
