Jeep 2.5TD, engine diagnosis?

Hi everyone,
I have a jeep cherokee 2.5TD Limited ed, SE.
spent a lot of money on her and she was sounding and driving great until last week.Drove to my friends house and parked her up then headed off to work in his truck.when we got back, got in the jeep to head home but she wouldn't start.tried everything then realised a glow plug had snapped off.
took to garage and had plugs changed and she fired up with an almighty banging sound.air is being pushed out of filter in stead of sucking air in.
Any ideas what this could be?
Many thanks.

stuck valves maybe

Did part of the Glow plug end up inside the cylinder, then got stuck in a valve and the piston is slapping into the valve now?

Maybe not the right answer, but our VM diesels have a problem with pushrods, they can be bendt or just jump out from the lifter after high rpms.I changed mine when my engine turned 200000 km,just pull off your valve cover and check.

she lives again

Hi guys,
thanks for your replies. Managed to get glow out, even the snapped one, took rocker cover off and one of the con rods was flopping out.checked to see if still straight, fixed back to rocker arm, now exhaust valve open, tightened up and timed and replaced rocker cover and she fired up sweet as a nut!
cheers.
