Another thing i have payed more attention too is my temp gauge, it never really goes past about 170 180 and is sometimes even lower. i know these things typically run at 200 210. i put a new 3 row radiator in it about 3 months ago, which put it at 180 to 200 on average. Just recently with the problems im having i noticed the lower temp. Not sure if this normal? Maybe sheds more light on the subject.

I'm going to replace my distributor tonight and I will let you know if that was the trouble with mine. I've seen a few posts where people have had the same problem we are having but they don't bother to post what fixed theirs or maybe they just gave up on their jeep. Myself, I will fix this problem soon that way I can go back to sleeping at night again. Renix has to be the hardest engine in the world to trouble shoot hands down!

i think ive pin pointed the problem, its the wire harness that runs along the valve cover that feeds the fuel injectors. tried wiggling the wires and plugs today while running and the idle would jump up and down. i messed with it for about ten minutes trying to figure out which wires were doing it but i think i need to unwrap the harness and start there. funny thing is it ran fine the whole way home, no problems. Just hope i dont need a new harness, but with all the electrical problems im having, it might not be a bad idea. I'll keep the progress posted.

It's been awhile but as of this point I'm still having issues. I can't narrow down a faulty wire but since my last post I have had no power loss while driving.it's like it fixed itself, for now at least. It does act like it wants to stall while sitting at stop though. It's like an electrical glitch or something, it never actually stalls, just cuts out for a second and back on. I checked all my grounds and replaced the battery. Nothing helping, I am truly stumped, but it runs fine other than that. Any other ideas are welcome.

have you checked spark plugs, wires, distributor....that should have been the first thing to check. I replace my spark plugs and wire every 2 years because of where I live.

Just to let you know it was the fuel pump on mine! Bought it at AZ and it came as a complete unit for 111 bucks. Great looking assembly new sending unit, pump,Filter sock, harness with correct plug, even the factory zip ties that clip to the body! After all this the fuel sending unit doesn't work right. I pulled it back out and checked the ohms it read from 0-88 but the old one read from 6.8-100 so I just bent the float arm until it read 6.8 at the empty position. Seems to work great now with no hesitation or surging.

Thanks for the update okpwrlineman, how long ago did you replace the fuel pump? I know these problems seem fixed and then sometimes resurface after a couple weeks. I was thinking about replacing mine this weekend, that or the alternator. I hate just throwing parts at it but i dont have much time for thorough diagnostics with a full time job and a 3 year old at home demanding my attention. Glad to hear yours is fixed, these jeeps are a pain in the ***** but worth the effort.

i am having the same intermittent issue with my 2000.... will be bad in first couple minutes of driving even to the point of backfiring up front then tend the work normal...just seems like the engine is bogged down...weird idle and surges, will try to stall...i just pulled the gas tank and there was so much dirt and sediment built up around the pump assembly...pump was about to go you could hear it making that high pitch noise...am about to put the pump in ...hopefully that will take care of me

My instinct was O2 sensor, but if that's not it, Gnome - and you've hit everything else I could think of - I'd definitely look into fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel pump wiring. Or live with it, which is what I do.

I have had this same issue in the past. turns out it was a fuel delivery / electrical issue. The fuel pump would cut out, thus hesitate/stall.
The problem I found was with the little thing called the "ballast resistor". a white resistor stuck to the driver side front fender in the engine compartment, near the air filter.
Try replacing it, and also replace the connections on the wires going to it.
Power goes through this to the fuel pump.
