Intermittent miss/cut out

I have a 95 4wd xj, 4.0, auto 168k mi. that has an intermittent miss or cut out (sometimes). While driving at a constant or highway speed, the jeep will cut out/miss just for a split second. It acts like the ignition is switched off or power to the fuel pump is lost for that split second. It's not the obvious tune-up items or filters. I'm having a hard time diagnosing the problem as it doesn't happen all the time. When it does start to happen though, if I floor it, the jeep will down shift and pull really well with no hesitation or cut out at all. Then I resume my cruising speed and all is good until it has the miss again, then it's time to floor it. This has me stumped, any ideas?

Ignition problem? Does the '95 have a vacuum advance? Maybe dumping the throttle and the associated vacuum loss jiggles something. Just a guess, though.

I've been having the same problems with my 88, i changed the fuel filter and it got a little better, but it still does it here and there. It's only really when im gaining speed, shifting through the gears to get up to about 70 or so, it'll cut out a couple times after 3-5. but not always. I would say 7 outta 10 times.

I don't think it's igniton, today while on the fwy it started to act up, I stepped on it to make it go away. While cruising along I turned the key off and back on really fast and it it did what it does when it acts up. The only difference being when I turned the key off, the speedo and radio went off as well.

You should check all grounds. Sounds like an intermitten ground issue. Pay close attention to the ground between the head and firewall.

Sorry, Ignore multiple posts.

I know this thread is old, but I'm sorta having the same problem on my 96 XJ. What did you find out it was?
Thanks

I know this is an older thread, but I'm having the same problem with my 96 XJ. What ended up being the problem with yours?
Thanks!

Problem Fixed

Finally figured out my problem. Was on the harness side of the CPS connector, took apart the connector and re-crimped the wires, bent to a slight angle to fit tighter, zip tied it so it couldn't move, just in case, and now I have no more intermittent cut out while driving or sitting at idle.

Sometimes, its the simplest things.... Hope this helps someone in the future.
