Interior Fuel ODOR!

What could be causing this terribly strong fuel odor inside my jeep?

superj 03-17-2010 09:52 PM

a leak?

spare fuel tank in the back?

injector o-rings leaking

winston427 03-17-2010 09:52 PM

First guess would be a fuel leak under the hood somewhere and the smell is being drawn in through the vents. Possilbe the o-rings around the injectors.

I have checked all the fuel lines. I have replaced every filter on it. I dont smell fuel under the hood when it is opened. but I can smell fuel outside the jeep when I get close to it. the smell is really bad when I fill it all the way up.

Gas smell

Check the injectors while the engine is running.

Have you ever replaced the fuel evap cannister? It could be clogged or one or more hose's could be cracked or broken off.

same problem for me..smells like a skunk... only sometime though. It happened after i replaced the line to the evap canister. The PO had removed it. Could that be the problem? Could one just remove the canister if its clogged?

It stinks that bad an nothing is leaking on the ground? maybe plugged tank vent? or cracked evap canister.

So what you guys suggest I do first? The injector o rings is an easy check but do they sell kits for those o rings? and is there a place where I can buy a new one and what kind of lines run out of it?

oriellys autozone advanced auto all those sell the kits, Make sure your injectors are not leaking inbetween the middle where there joined. Thats what happened to me, it wasnt the seals but had to replace the injectors them selves

how much are these kits running for cause I know the injectors arent cheap.

If no odor is under hood do not replace o-rings on the injectors, If there was a leak there you would smell it under the hood. First do you have any check engine lights (small or large evap leak)? After you pull the codes check all fuel lines going from the engine back to the tank. I used a spray bottle with soap and water and sprayed all connections to look for pressure escaping anywhere. If you cannot find any leaks in the lines themselves then I would go for the tank. There is a seal in the tank for the fuel pump and they have a bad reputation of cracking or becoming leaky.(if it a internal pump) if not check the inline fuel pump seals on both sides. If all that fails check the evap system (charcoal canister and evap solenoid) as these items will also have a fuel odor when clogged, but it is very very rare for the evap components to go bad.

also check the fill hoses into the tank, check the gas cap o-ring for proper seal, I would def. look over every possible thing before you spend any money......I have seen people wild goose chase fuel issues and spend alot of uneeded money just to find out it was a cracked hose or loose connection lol.....dont be that guy take the time and look it over very good.

……Fuel problems are a pain in the ***** man good luck, but it should be something very obvious as you are smelling a strong odor from the jeep. Just do not park anywhere near water heaters or anything that gives a spark or you will be dealing with a more serious issue lol:furious:

yes a car can run without an evap system (cannister) as they are for emissions, but lines must be plugged or you will run into weird running issues lol I talk from experience

one more thing is that if you really dont have the time to look it over take it to a mechanic and do a smoke test on all fuel lines, this can sometimes find a big leak in the system.
