Interchangeable Dash Cluster
 

I have an 89 XJ 4.0 4x4 auto 102,000 miles.


Here is a picture of the kind of cluster I currently have.

Can I switch to one from an 88-89 Wagoneer Limited I found in the JY? It looks like this.

As you can see it is the same style but has the RPM hand. I know there is the other style with the RPM but I'm not a big fan of those. Would what I have be a straight plug in for mine since they are both Renix and both already have oil, heat, & battery hands? Would the RPM hand work?

& lastly what about the odometer? Can I make it match what I have 102,000? I think the Wagoneer had 118,000. Thank you.

PS: The picture I provided of the one with RPM has 220 on gauge. So I think it is from an earlier Jeep. I know where one of those are too but it is tore apart. The Wagoneer had 210.

I'm pretty sure it will work. I know the various types of clusters interchange within the Cherokee line. For example, if you have a plain-jane cluster with no tach and just idiot lights, you can pop in a deluxe cluster with gauges, including the tach. It's plug and play. Quite a few on here have done it. It has to be a compatible year, of ocurse. You can''t put a 94 cluster in a 97, for example, or vice versa.

I don't know about changing the odometer. Good records are necessary if you find you can't. Failure to disclose an odometer change is fraud.

If all is as you describe the cluster will work. You will need to swap out the oil pressure and coolant temp sending units for the gauges to work.

I was able to easily change the new cluster’s odo reading to reflect actual miles on the vehicle, but the difference you state is so close I wouldn’t bother.

If both are 88-89 Renix with the same heat hand & oil pressure hand then why would I need to change those sensors....just curious.

How did you change the odometer? At the junkyard today I took one apart to try and figure it out but just gave up hahaha.

The one you have says "Certified Calibration." You usually only find those in police vehicles. And it goes up to 120 mph. If the axle ratio between the 2 vehicles is different, you'll have to change the speedo gear in the t/case.

I did not notice that. That is pretty cool. Find it strange that a Police version of those years would not have a tach. Swapping in the appropriate gauges, if possible, would be the best of both worlds.

Cops are hard on vehicles. The New York State Police one year bought 427 4-speed manual trans Impalas for the Thruway Patrol and the guys destroyed them in one year! GM gave them a really good deal on them trying to get them to switch from Fords. They had 20 of them at auction for cheap.

I didn't notice that either. That is cool. That was just a picture I found of the style of my cluster. Mine does only read up to 85. It would be pretty cool to find one that went up to 120 haha.

Funny about the Certified Calibration. In my area, the Town of Manlius and the Town of Dewitt both have stationary radar units to monitor vehicle speed and warn drivers that they are speeding. They give you 5 mph, then they start flashing violently! According to my speedos in both my jeeps, they read 3 mph faster in Manlius and 2 mph faster in Dewitt at any speed up to 45. So, I can bump the speed that much and still not be speeding! I'm waiting for them to put cameras on these units. That should be fun. Those red&white flashing lights are bright enough to catch an image.

From my understanding, the swap will work. Also, if you put in some time and effort, you can probably swap the speedometer over, assuming they have the same screw mounting pattern and are both cable driven. The 84-86 and 87-90 used different upper speedometer cables, so be careful of that.

Swapping over the speedometer will also mean you don't have to play with the mileage. You can change the mileage, but its a bit of work, depending how many miles you want to change. I did this when I swapped my idiot light cluster to the one that you have now, with full gauges sans tach.

I always wanted a cluster like that second one, I hope to find one for my 92 one day, or somehow frankenstein several gauge clusters to make one.
