Inaccurate fuel gauge--how inaccurate are they supposed to be? 90 cherokee
Hi all,
My specs: 1990 Cherokee, 6cyl, 4x4
My fuel gauge swings like crazy and sometimes it shows near E and other times it will show nearly half fuel ....all changes depending on whether I'm driving incline or decline a hill, etc. I expect there to be some play when driving on hills and stuff, but is it that bad? It just seems like my fuel gauge is not that accurate. I once was stranded on a highway as soon as my fuel gauge empty light came on. Thought I would have a small reserve at that point?
Anyways, just wondering if this is an anomaly. If so, is it a simple fix that I can do?
Thanks!

since the gauge on the fuel pump is mechanical and not electric, there will always be play it it, sometimes excessive. mine have always done that, each fuel pump is different. my 88 Cherokee was way more accurate then my 94 is.

Sounds like you need gas! I found my 90 uses the same amount when I keep it above 1/2 tank as when it's below. Where it's located it will really drop heading up, and read high going down. Guess its more radical when fuel is low.
I've seen posted that you can clean the innards of the sending unit with alcohol. I guess they get grimy....might help...D.
