importance of axle dust guard
I want to take them off. mine are bent and make noise against the rotor. they dont even look like they offer much coverage
can I lose them?

The dust shields on the front rotors? Toss em. I think most vehicles north the 40th parallel older than 10 years are without. If you mean the debtis guards in the front axle that keep crap out of the axle tube, yes those are important.
