Default No Crank, No Start. Is It the Ignition Switch Again? Or Something Else?

Hey Cherokee Wrenchers,

Quick question, I moved my son's Jeep (formerly my Jeep-1994 XJ Sport-6cyl.) out the driveway so I could get out and had some difficultly removing the key. Then when I started it back up it wouldn't start.

No start-no crank, everything is dead except for the radio, and I have access to the check engine light code, which is: 12;41.

I'm wondering if this could be the ignition switch again. I just want to have some sort of solution for him when he gets up so he doesn't panic.

I replaced the ignition switch in 2012, and the 02 sensor in 2014. How can I determine the issue?

Thanks!

I think he's asking if the headlights are working. often times if the connection at the battery is bad you may get some accessories but not all.

if the battery and terminals look ok it could be a PRNDL switch (transmission range switch or gear selector or park neutral switch) if it thinks that the vehicle is in any other gear other than park or neutral it wont want to start and may even provide some difficulty getting the key out. try starting the vehicle in neutral instead of park and see if that makes a difference.

Okay, let me check the headlights. I know he's had problems with the headlights in the past and had to had this supplemental wiring for the headlights to even work. One of mine, if I park it hot it will always start in the AM. If I just re-park it the cold grease in the NSS doesn't always let the widget contact the watchyamacallit. I just hold the key over on start and move the shiftier and it fires every time. Been that way for years, (just gotta warn anyone borrowing the Jeep)

If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

Headlights are fine. Started her up in neutral, and she fired right up.
But I have 3 questions:
1) Does this mean he needs a good neutral safety switch cleaning?
2) Is there a way to avoid having all of those wires for the headlights to work independently?
3) Are the codes 12 and 41 significant? I can't seem to find solutions for those.
Thanks guys; very, very much!

Might be hard to troubleshoot if it's intermittent. I haven't done it, but I gather adjusting the NSS is just trial and error. (where I'd start with mine, if I cared enough). I guess you just move it this way and that until it cranks in both Park and Neutral, and the reverse lights work. See the link I posted, IIRC that is at the end : )

Was just thinking. If it IS doing this> If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/ < you might be better to just go ahead and clean or replace it. Might just be a waste of time trying to adjust it. If I WERE to attempt mine.....After over 10 years, I know I need to pull on the shifter. Knowing that one could figure which direction, side of the "green zone" to aim, to set it at, (if any.) (Green zone meaning where P, N, and reverse are all correct)

I'll pass on the NSS cleanup, and see how that goes. I'll post when he gets done (not sure how long that might be).

Thanks.

see how what goes? Taking the nss off, cleaning it, and putting it back on took me 20 minutes. It's really easy.

its not. 3 zip ties that i reached easily with long pliers and the nut is really easy to get to with a socket. Only thing was prying it off but that stillbwasnt difficult.
