I own a 1995 Cherokee Sport, 6 cylinder/auto with 209,000 miles. The engine starts when cranked, but as soon as you release the key to the run position, the engine dies. If I hold the key in the start position, it stays running.
Any ideas?
Does the '95 have the fuel pump ballast resistor? This is a white ceramic unit on the drivers side inner fender with two wires running to it.
This is switched into the fuel pump circuit after the engine starts to quiet the pump by reducing the voltage to the pump. It is not needed and was eliminated in later model years. You can easily see if a failing resistor is the problem by disconnecting the wires and clamping them together. Start the Jeep and see if it now continues to run.
If not, time for Plan B. If so, permanently connect the two wires and insulate.
Check you ignition switch contact block. There is a great video on YouTube for the tear down. Your fuel injection is held on by the RUN position of that switch. Easy to replace This is what mine looked like the black contact is sunken into the board. The symptom of this was intermittent crank and sometimes crank and die when the key is released.
It,s been six days and no occurrence. I have been awakened two nights by no start condition but then I realized I was in my bed and no where near the jeep!
It fixed moving on to another question, inner shift boot.
Well, its been about a year and a half and no starting issues. I can now call that issue fixed. Now the next issue is the inner shift boot between the hump in the floor pan and the shift stick. This is the AX 15 5 speed. I have made several calls and many searches in the last few days with zero results. Any body got an idea what to do to find a boot that will work.
