 I'm sure I'll end up using yours in some discussion somewhere, and everyone driving the little compacts in the room is going to stare at me.

the amount of mounting bolts is not the only factor

"when in doubt, make it stout"
Nobody ever talks about how dangerous going overkill on your strength is. The second weakest point should be the strap, the first weakest should be the vehicle stuck.

My goal is to get there, but do so on a budget.

A hitch is a GREAT recovery point although yours not so much, get ya a new class 3 hitch and then slap a d-ring in there like this

This will be all the rear recovery you need.

I received a post to a similar thread on NAXJA, they said for light to medium recoveries, this hitch worked fine. I do plan to upgrade to a class III, I just cannot afford one right now. It's good to know that in a pinch, this hitch will work for a recovery.

I was refering to any earlier post that said "to my knowledge all hitches with 3 bolts perside are class III's.

Was pointing out that is not the case.

You get class III by how it is rated not by bolts on the side our else Reese hitches would be out of business lol.

Depends on two things....

A. What is the clevis(the actual name of that part) rated at? They have differing ratings depending on the construction and size of them.

B. What is securing that shackle reciever in your hitch? The pic makes it look like some type of pin. What is the rating on that pin? Generally a 5/8" ths Grade 8(or metric equivialent) will fit right into that hole and do the job.

If you use a bolt make absolutely sure to use either lock washers or a locking nut to keep it in there.

I didn'thve the pin in mine. when I took the pic. Mine is a standard stainless steel lock pin. Rated for a class 3 hitch which if I am not mistake is 7500 lbs.

Which is probably gonna be right on the edge of acceptable for a 'snatch' type of recovery.

It's the same thought process as why an 8k winch is the ABSOLUTE minimum needed for an XJ....

You are looking at a 4k+ vehicle, possibly mired in mud or dirt or whatever causing an even higher efffective pull strength needed to free it an move it.

A straight line pull on level ground of a vehicle needs a MUCH smaller effective strength pull than one that is mired, hung up or off angle.

Do yourself a favor and PM Rev. He is the head tech inspector for Naxja at WinterFest. He will help you get what you need to make it. I know that if you were at a run for my local jeep club, I would fail you with a regular hitch pin in there.

XJ Stryker 12-24-2008 06:45 PM

I hear what your saying but I still havn't seen a Class 3 hitch come off of any vehicle when it was being recovered.
