My wife's 1996 Grand Cherokee Ltd had the same problem - dies/stalls with no Check Engine code set. Over time, the problem got worse, the engine dying on the freeway under half throttle. It acts like a fuel or ignition problem, but it's not.

I chased this elusive problem for months and months. It is now fixed. Looked like ignition, so I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, coil - no improvement. Threw many more "likely" parts at it - no improvement. I'm a little ashamed at the number of parts I wasted. Then I came across this link:

and I knew I was on the road to a solution. To foreshadow what's at this link - the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is losing power intermittently due to one or more weak solder connections within the PCM. Easy to follow instruction, but quite difficult to solder in practice because of the aluminum heatsink backing plate (which is described).

If you don't have shop facilities to disassemble the PCM and resolder the weak connections, the Jeep dealer only wants about $700 for a rebuilt part with a $300 core charge. In case I fried the wife's Jeep PCM, before I started the repair, as a fall-back plan I located an exactly identical rebuilt PCM, programmed with the latest firmware at a company called Flagship One ( http://www.fs1inc.com/ ) for about $190 with free shipping.
