I run 10w 40 I know that a lot run 15w 40 you can try a 10w 30 just check your oil pressure and see how it does , If it seems low just run a little heavier oil to keep the oil pressure where you like it .

I run 10w30 with WIX (NAPA Gold) filters in my Jeeps year round. If you're in a cold climate area you could go with 5w30 in the winter months.

10w30 is fine.
Valvoline Maxlife is good and pretty cheap. Rotella 10w30 is also good and cheap
Use the Wix 51515 (Napa Gold 1515). Motorcraft FL1A is also good. Increases the capacity by about 0.7 qt and gives you increased surface area. Probably only costs $1 more than whatever they spec for the 4.0

What does everybody think about the PurolatorONE oil filter?
I've been using Valvoline conventional 10W-30 in my vehicles for over 50 years and never had a oil related problem even after a total roast overheat. As soon as it cooled off, it cranked over. BUT I just spent over an hour reading Salad's oil thread and I think I'm going to change to Rotella T6.

My local Advance often runs oil change specials that include that filter. One day I was picking up oil and guy behind the counter tells me not to forget to grab the free PurolatorONE filter as part of the deal. So I said, "Free! Love it". Then he says, "if you love it so much, then why don't you marry it!". So I did. It was a great day too, the weather was perfect, surrounded by family and friends, it was classy and refined. At first, everything was great. We would go on long trips to the mountains, go camping, see the sights, or just go visit friends. The way you've always heard it should be. Then things started to change, subtle at first. I would say something to the filter, and it would just sit there...silent. Nothing I did seemed to help. I still went on drives, and the filter was still there, but in some ways it was like we were in two different worlds. Like I was on the inside, and the filter was on the outside. Like there was some sort of unspoken firewall between us. No anger, just indifference.
And so that is how it has been for a few years. The filter does its job, and I do mine. We don't really talk. I drive...and it just sits there. It hasn't done anything wrong, that I know of. There has been no commotion, no strange behavior. I don't know if it is happy or not, but it stays on...so maybe that counts for something. I've thought about making a change you know? Maybe something more exotic like a WIX, the kind I would throw on for fun when I was younger. Sure, it would probably make me feel better for a while. But when I said "I do for 5000 miles", I meant it. They weren't just words to me.
So will I use this filter forever? I just don't know man (pause) I just don't know. I suppose the real question is...will Advance keep running specials like this? They've been running them for so long, I've almost forgotten what life looked like before I had a PuralatorONE filter on.

Rethinking my oil choice
so I read the super lengthy and very informative post by salad. In a nutshell I’ll be switching to rotella t6 5w40. It’s made for Diesel engines but considering out 4.0 engines are a super old design that is basically a tractor motor the diesel oil is a better match than modern oils made for gas engines that are light years different in design than ours. Salad has the most informative post I have seen yet and he left out all the opinion BS.

I won't opine on the oil - I use Mobil1 5-30 or 10-30 since that's what my Dad used on his 400k original mile XJ - but folks should do what they think is best for their own Jeeps.
As far as filters, the only one that I had any issues with was the Fram (orange can of death) and then only in my 95 XJ - I ran fram once or twice in my previous 4.0 Jeep (a '00 TJ) without trouble. My 95 seemed to like the WIX quite a bit and I recently put a Mobil1 filter on (since I got it on sale) and it's been fine.

For what it's worth, the Fram Xtra Guard are regarded as some of the best on the market according BITOG
I still stick to wix/Napa gold because it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
