1996 Cherokee Country 4wd, stock 4.0, MPI fuel injection. I managed to get it home, it would start but run a few secs and shut off. Changed fuel filter and would not start at all. Thoroughly cleaned throttle body, changed fuel pump and that was when things got strange! Took old pump out, the little 2-3 inch hose was split, took it apart, put in new pump BUT, the rubber grommet on bottom would not line up with bracket that attaches it, was too big, so I used old grommet. Reinstalled, engine fired immediately, ran 2-3 seconds and stopped. So, I pulled new pump, installed new little 2-3 inch hose on old pump, reinstalled, engine starts immediately, runs 8-10 seconds, shuts off...now, the 0-ring that goes on lock ring that holds pump to tank is elongated, may not be sealing??? Looked at MAP sensor, bought new one for 96 4.0, was not the same as the one on My engine, then I discovered late 96 thru 97 they changed to slightly diff MAP sensor...So now I am thinking maybe is 97 motor in 96 chassis...did they also change fuel pump? HELP!!!

the 96 fuel pump is unique, make sure you got the right one.

Sounds exactly like ^^^THIS^^^ went bad. Try bypassing it if you do in fact have one.
