How to treat Gas Tank Rust?
How should I treat this gas tank rust? I would like to get ahead of it ... or am I already stearing toward a new gas tank in the near future?
Any product recommendations? Someone mentioned POR-15 I was thinking of getting something local from Oreilly like Permatex, but I have also seen something you attach to a drill and remove it that way. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web..._T|GRP2050____ http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2159&ppt=C0171 http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/w...P1100101-2.jpg |
Rotary wire brush to remove the rust on the outside.
If you have rust on the inside, you could drop the tank, & empty out the fuel into a container. Then you could put some ball bearings inside it, (say 3/8"or 1/2") and shake the tank around for a little while. This would loosen most of the rust & allow you to flush it out before hanging it back up. Just be sure to get all the bearings back out, they would rattle & roll around when you drive. |
Something tells me I should not only remove the rust but put something over top of it? What do you think? Or, will it just be fine with out putting something over the areas after removing the rust?
