How Are These Speakers?

I'm looking for a speaker with crisp, clear mid/highs and a little bass at a non-ridiculous price. I mainly listen to classic rock, jam bands, and the random G-Funk era beats when I feel like being an OG with my main man Snoop D-O-DoubleG. I have been looking at these Pioneers for $50/pair in the factory locations:

I just put this Kenwood X595 deck in and have no real intention to throw an amp in for the speakers right now. Comparing specs, it looks like the speakers can do more than my deck can.

Does this look like a good combo to go with? I may put a 10" sub in the cubby hole in the back later on as well.

Thanks,
-Tyler

I haven't used those exact speakers, but I have had very good luck with pioneer. Also, an amp doesn't just boost volume, it also cleans up the music, and makes it much more crisp. A small 4 channel amp may be something to look for if you are going for sound quality.

Well with that in mind, how would these do with my current setup as-is? And would they be a good speaker that would be worthwhile of an amp later on?

I used to sell pioneer. G series is barely an improvement over stock. Poor midbass response, and the highs are tinny. And they don't get much better if you amp them. Their d series is a great bang for your buck, sound good on just deck power and really open up when amped. Theyll cost twice as much a the g's but are worth it. Best bet is to find a dealer that carries them both and listen to them side by side. I have pioneer premier d series components in front and coaxials in the back off of a pioneer premier amp and deck. Love em. Sound almost as good as a set of jl audio components I had my heart set on, but those cost $500.. I wouldn't use those g series speakers as paper weights, theyd probably suck suck at that too.

Not much better than stock? That seems a bit of a stretch. Maybe in the long line-up of speakers out there and comparing, but Pioneer anything not much better than factory paper speakers?

I've been in sales since I was 14 and know how it gets sometimes... You get so caught up in the better products that the lowers are completely inferior to ya even when they really aren't half bad... Is it something like that or are they just flat out crap? I figured for the money, they'd be about the best bang for what I want.

I worked for an independent high end car/home audio/video shop for over four years. You asked for opinions from people with experience with these speakers, and it's my opinion that if the stock paper speakers were cheaper than $50 new, I'd throw those in. The only time those g speakers ever sold were for work trucks and vans. youre asking for decent mid bass response and crisp clear highs, you won't get it from their bottom tier line up. I believe three next step up is the "a"series, price those out, Your best bet like I said is to find a shop that carries them and have a nice listen session, jl audio has an awesome write up on their site for what to look and listen for when purchasing speakers. Mainly when I'm listening to a speaker in a demo room and the highs jump out, I shy away from that speaker, cause in a car it'll rip my eardrums to sheds, but some people like that.... It's hard to talk audio sometimes, everyone hears and prefers different things, I recommended the d series not only because I own them but in the two years they were out while I was in the audio business, I sold more of them than any other speaker model/brand combined. They're that good of a bargain. I lost commission with customers that were about to drop five times as much money on higher end speakers after they took a listen to them. Just my long winded 2¢.

Sorry, to answer your question, no, nothing pioneer makes is flat out crap, but I wouldn't spend $50 on those speakers when for twice as much you get a speaker that is more than twice as good, and will be able to handle a decent amp and keep up with a sub.

Pioneer has always made a nice product. I have kenwood speakers in my XJ and they're really crisp though.

If I were you, id get an alpine head unit. They have better sound processors than kenwood head units.

I've always liked alpine and pioneer hu's. Never been a big fan of kenwood. Jvc makes a nice product. Truth be told most upper mid to high end decks would work for most people. Depending on what their desired end result is.

You can get 4 of those speakers with a headunit from walmart for $80. Those speakers sound like new stock speakers. If you want something decent...save some money and buy some nice ones the first time around. I am big into audio quality and will say...some will tell you name brands arent worth it....but if you hear a good name brand and then a offbrand side by side, you can tell the clarity and distortion.

If you are on a budget, I say look at the Polk Audio db series. They will run you about $85-100 and are great low budget speakers. They have good mid bass and clear highs. I had these in my jeep for a temporary upgrade from stock until I had time to fab up my doors to hold my Focal components.

Infintiy is also a decent speaker for on a budget. I personally dont like the sound of sony and pioneer speakers but that is just me.

Long story short dont buy those speakers. Save up $50 and you will never regret doing it in the end.

I've usually shied away from the cheaper stuff, no matter what brand it is.

Upper-middle price range is usually about right for me. Past that point, the differences in the product can be difficult to distinguish.

Look at Alpine Type S coax's SPS-600. I ran them off the head unit for around 8 months and they had a good amount of bass. Throw an amp on them and you'll get even more.

I installed the Kenwood KDC-BT848U receiver and Kenwood KFC-G1620 speakers all around on my 2001 sport few months ago. It sounds clearer over stock but not any louder. What will make it perform 10x better would be to connect it to an amp.

Only you know what you like when it comes to audio. Get out to some big box stores and some independents and do some listening. Buying speakers without listening to them is like buying a car without popping the hood and going for a ride.

Those are actually the other ones I am looking at. Right now neither of the fronts work from spliced wires so I'm going to upgrade "at least" those ones. If I drop the $100 and just put the Polks in the front but leave the stockers in the rear...Would that just be something to piss me off with different sounds or would I get by? $100 was really about the max I wanted to spend for right now why I was looking at the Pioneers to get all four.

These are the Polks I have been looking at:

I'm not looking to win any competitions or anything... Just a good sounding system that will let me fully enjoy the jams.
