*How To* simply replace the fan clutch
My fan clutch would not move freely, my xj also ran hot when i was sitting in traffic. The new one is bigger and has fins for keeping cool. I decided to take 10 minutes and replace it. I did it blindfolded with my right hand tied behind my back.
1. Acquire a 13mm and 14mm open-end wrench, a fan clutch, and a jeep.
2. Remove your fan shroud. Mine was (at that time) broken on the top. Now look down. You should see this..
3. there are 4 nuts holding the clutch on the jeep, and the fan is bolted to the clutch. Remove the 4 nuts and the clutch + fan should slide straight up and out. I was able to get the lower two nuts from the bottom easily.
4. Now remove the 4 bolts holding the fan to the clutch (13mm or 14mm? i forget..) Transfer the fan over to the new clutch. Notice it will only fit flush one way, you will need to rotate it until it falls into place. There were actually notches in some of the fins on my new one just so it fit right.
5. Now do step 3, then 2 in reverse to finish up. That was easy.
OLD vs NEW.
BONUS TIP!!!
Make sure you have a spare car available when you remove the old clutch and forget the new one at home.

Having no fan shroud makes this a lot easier. However, for those who actually have a shroud, it should be of note, that it will make some difference in regards to removing the viscous fan clutch, since both shroud and fan will need to come out together (this because you cant remove the shroud separately). Unfasten the shroud first and lift it towards the rear, over the fan blades; this will allow access to the 4 bolts of the fan clutch.
Leaving the belt tight, helps with breaking the 4 bolts that hold the clutch to the pulley. If not loosened after breaking the bolts, the 'pulley' sometimes tends to not sit straight and this way it might be more difficult to snug down the bolts evenly. So, loosening the belt after breaking the bolts helps and also allows for the pulley to be rotated to get the 4 bolts off more easily.
Other than that, thanks for the write-up.
10 Minutes, blindfolded and with one arm...nice job (broke the bolts, while holding the fan blades with your teeth ?

If you remove roughly a 3/4in wide-8in long section of the bottom of the fan shroud, you can remove and install w/o any issue. Also doing this does not affect cooling ability.

Maybe one of the PO's cut the notch out?

Nice turbo setup the Wagon in my Avatar is a SBC 427 ci. Dart Block/Heads, F.I., 100 ppi Injectors with Twin Turbo's Air to Water Intercooler on it.
Built on it for 2 yrs. finished engine on dyno for initial program all's good 1397hp. Installed in wagon 1st test and tune at the track first 2 pass's just worked on suspension to much front end in the air. Got it dialed in made a full pass 1/4 mi 159mph @ 8.98 went back to pits and they asked me to leave.
One went to fast without a chute and the one I couldn't fix. I was now on oxygen 24/7 and it was not allowed in the car PERIOD so after 40 yrs of racing no more.
Good news I found off roading not quite the same feeling but fun. But I enjoyed seeing your car!!
