Default Help identify this part where I found a vacuum leak?

Hey, I think its been like 10 years since I last posted here. Still have the same jeep though. I just did the harbor freight fluid transfer pump/cheap cigar smoke test.

The smoke came out right where the tip of that screwdriver is pointing. There doesnt seem to be any sort of gasket or tube there to replace. What is leaking?

That looks like the throttle body the throttle shaft is probably on the loose side .

That sounds like good news if i can just tighten it! I searched the forum for how to tighten the throttle shaft but nothing came up. Need the torque too. I will keep trying google unless someone here can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Shoot. There’s no such thing as a throttle shaft in either the haynes or chiltons books. Google isn’t going to work for me until i get the correct name for the part!

edit: sorry you said throttle body. Found it. Looks like 16 ft lbs. and if that doesn’t do it there’s apparently a gasket in there.

If it's coming from the TB gasket area, you should replace the gasket.

FSM say 108 lb-in (inch-pounds if you prefer) or 12 nm.

Do you have a high idle?

thanks!
The idle isn’t high that I can tell but seems rough though from the leak.

So these bolts or nuts were at like maybe 5 ft lbs or less. I started tightening them but I’m getting real nervous about stripping something. The book says 16 ft/lbs on the throttle body mounting nuts.

its a 93 cherokee sport 4.0. Can anyone confirm the correct torque?

Crap both books say 16 ft lbs on the throttle body mounting. They say i should have three nuts and there four on mine. Are these even the correct nuts to tighten? The screwdriver is in one of them.

oh crap. Thank you. That is exactly where it was leaking smoke. Not from where its mounted.

i hope i didn't mess up those mounting bolts they seem to call nuts in the book. Looks more like four bolt heads with hex or torx in the middle.

So what did I just over tighten?

If you have Pick and Pull salvage yard in your airy. I would go dumpster diving and see if they have a Jeep with a Throttle Body that will work on your Jeep. If they do pull it off and pay them and take it home and see what luck you have modify it.
If you are lucky then you have a Throttle Body to exchange with yours and see if solves your problem and works OK!

If you wanna know if that vacuum leak is affecting anything, spray carb cleaner around that area at idle and observe how the engine reacts.

All throttle body's will have a small leak at the shaft because it needs to be able to move . If you have the engine idling and spray the shaft with carb spray and it dosen't do much to the idle then it's ok .
