On the passenger side its just a 10mm pressed nut under the removable cover, the drivers side on mine I think just popped out...but both sides you need to get the trim pieces along the bottom of the door frame off. Those are philips.

if you have manual windows you will need a tool to pop off the handle or even try using plyers

Just thought I'd clarify for any newbs like me. It's a 12mm for the kick panel. For the piece that runs along the driver's side seat bottom, just take out the first two screws and loosen the third if you still need more wiggle room. This should give you enough space to pull the kick panel piece out without removing anymore than is necessary.

Be patient and just wiggle the pieces around to pull the kick panel out.

Necrothread bump.

I've removed the nut, and removed the screws on the bottom trim, but the kick panel feels like it is held in really solidly. Are there clips or something I am pulling against?

Just pull until it comes out. If it breaks figure out why then go get a replacement at the jy lol.

I just did this yesterday to replace a hood release cable. There are no clips holding it. If it won't come loose, you could always remove another screw down the side. The screw closest to the front goes through a hole in the kick panel piece. You should be able to pull it out from around the holding nut and then pull it out.

Yeah, the nut is removed, as are the side trim screws. Just feels very solid in there. I'll give it another try.

I got it off. It really popped. I think the nut had really mashed the plastic tight around the thread. Hopefully the kick panel can still be used.

My passager side one came off easy but I couldn't get a socket on the driver side nut. I just bent it around the hood release and worked around it.

I had the same problem on my '00 when I bought it about 4 years ago. I know master controls are not cheap but frankly I just figured it was better to bite the bullet and replace it then try the bypass trick.

Take it apart and resolder it. That's basically free if you have solder.
