is cold air intake BS?
Looks like I can spend $40-60 at autozone and put together a cold air intake kit for my Jeep. Problem is that I don't want to waste money for something that is just bull****.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ha, thanks sorry about that, will do.
Yeah, those were the filters I was looking at, and the tubes were only like $20-30 too.
What I am looking for is:
Better sound
Cooler running engine
Better acceleration
Even if it only does one of those three things, it would be worth it. The engine gets really hot (210 F) which is the running temp I know. Why not?

The term "Cold Air Intake" is misleading. The cone filter and tube draw air from under the hood... which is anything but cold. If the setup is seperated from the rest of the engine compartment then it may draw some cool air. I don't believe either would draw any colder air than what the stock system gets from behind the headlight area.
A snorkel would draw colder from above the vehicle rather than from inside the engine area.

The most you can hope for is what's already been said, slightly better HP & torque, most likely not a noticeable amount of increase though. As far as 'cold air' I agree you'll have to pull air from somewhere other than the engine compartment if you don't want it to be hot. If you want to change the sound then that falls more under the exhaust category. I'd go for it though, it's a fairly cheap mod and if nothing else looks cooler than the stock air box. Thinking about doing the same to mine.

Am I at lost here? I think the volant cold air intake that I saw at this site is around $260 for the whole kit.Am I looking at the wrong one?

I have set up better then that crap u can buy at autozone i will post pics and parts needed later when i get out of work. It is cheaper and i made a heat shield that I can post a template for you. With out the sheild the set up is useless because you just suck in hot air from the engine. With the sheild the filter will be cool to the touch no matter how long you are running

you will get a different sound and youll notice a very slight gain in hp and tq. mine was around 40 bucks and the most expensive part was the filter, other than that i just used some pvc pipe like most everyone else does. hopefully this weekend ill be able to get my heat shield made up

its more like a hot air intake
instead of taking air in from right behind the header panel it takes in air from the engine compartment.
you wont notice much of a difference in power and its just a waste of money imo.
the people i know that do it say "oh but now my air filter is reusable" while this is true, none of them ever clean it anyway
