how much tranny fluid do i put after i change my gasket
i'm going to put the transmission pan gasket on my xj, and when i'm done i need to know how much fluid to put back in

IIRC after draining the pan and then changing the pan gasket, it'll take roughly 5 qts of Dex/Merc III to refill. But you're gunna want a second opinion on that.
*edit* You could always put the fluid you take out into a measuring device of some sort to figure it out.

the reason i'm asking is because it's been leaking for a while and i'm sure that what comes out is not entirely what i will need

Dump in a quart or 2. Allow vehicle to warm to operating temp. check level warm on a flat surface, fill to full hot mark, done.
So buy ~ 5-6 qts. & you'll have a spare or 2 to toss in the back.
