Default How many miles can a cherokee sport take?

I am trying to buy a cherokee sport but almost all of the ones iv'e seen for sale have anywhere from 170,000 to 220,000 miles on them. I want to buy one but i dont want it to fall apart on me and I don't have much money for repairs. The years iv'e seen were 1996-2001

Default XJ's are indestructible

98 Cherokee classic with 240k runs like a champ. It WAS an original owner, but still XJ's are indestructible

I have seen cherokee's with over 350k with same motor and tranny never rebuilt, and still running like they were less than 100k

From what ive seen 4.0 motor and tranny are bullet proof, and if they do go out its no thing to find a replacement motor and tranny combo with just over 120k miles for 400 bucks here in GA.

More than you want to drive it, I beleive the record so far on an original drivetrain is into the 400K's

If you want a XJ I would say look for 150K no more than 175K. seen them go well into the 200's. They are reliable, if you spend the money needed to keep them that way, especially if you plan to EVER take it off-road. But heres the kicker, If you don't want to spend $ on it for maintenance, look for something else. If you want something that won't need a lot of repairs or maintenance get something newer from Japan or Korea.

I saw a 1,000,000 XJ on another forum once. Well actually it was 999,999.

If you dont offroad it Jeeps require just as little maintenance as these overseas vehicles. And dont buy a korean car, the only korean car maker that isnt in the bottom of reliability ratings is Hyundai, the are halfway decent. Kia's and Suzuki's are usually ranked near the bottom.

I realize this about street only Jeeps in general, BUT XJs are a minimum of 9 years old. Any vehicle 9 years or older is going to require extra maintenance. Hyundai actually is starting to out rank Toyota, I have had a 99 Sonata since 2000, with Zero issues. I agree about Kia and Suzuki. But I don't really understand the Kia issue due to Kia being owned by Hyudai. My Jeeps cost me about 10x the maintenance and fuel cost as the Hyundai, with miles driven being about the same. Of couse the Hyundai doesn't get the snot beat out of it every weekend.

The most I've seen is 500K and that was with only having replaced 1 water pump. The motor out lived the XJ and was swapped into a TJ..

365,000 and still going strong on mine. Original 4.0L engine, rebuilt AX-15 transmission. If I was in the market for another XJ, I wouldn't even hesitate buying one with the 4.0L and 150,000+ miles as long as it looks like it was well taken care of.

I just hit 250000 miles on my 98 Cherokee Sport. It has never had any thing done to the engine other than new belts and oil changes and it still has original clutch.
