Default how long can i drive with a lifter tick?

short story. I have an 89 Comanche that pukes oil. could never isolate it so I just dump a quart in every once in a while. she doesn't get driven much. so one day I decided to showoff and do a nasty burnout....followed by a tick. I pulled the valve cover and there is significant play in one of the rockers so I assumed it was a lifter. this is a high mileage motor and Im not pulling the head to replace a $3 part, plus I have a motor from an 88 mj with 48k miles going in it soon.

ive done maybe 200-300 miles since the tick started. is it safe to drive for a short time, until the new motor is ready to go in? I don't know how detrimental a bad lifter is. this is the 4.0 renix

Dont see why you wouldnt be ok as long as you dont dog it to much.

This is like asking how long a piece of string is. No definitive answer. Take your chances...........

I had a mitsubishi galant with a ticking lifter. I drove it easy for a year, would have probably kept going too. But, i got on it real hard one day and and it pooped. Don't see why you couldn't run it for a long while as long as you treat it easy.
