Default How to Know When it’s Time to Rebuild

Purchased a 94’ XJ for my daughter. It has no rust, and is in excellent shape, but a blown head gasket. Bought a reman engine from CarID. 3 Year, unlimited mile warranty for $1,700. But I digress...

The new engine in my daughters XJ feels like it has boatloads of power compared to my 91’.

In my 91’, gotta downshift to 3rd to get up some of the little hills in Southern Indiana. Feel like I could cruise CO with no problems in the 94’.

I guess I should do things like measure compression on my 91’ engine to evaluate.

But, I’m an IT guy, not a mechanic. I don’t know what else to check.

Al I know is that my daughter’s XJ feels like a 12 second quarter mile ride compared to mine.

That makes me think that the engine in my 91’ is aging and needs an overhaul.

Just to through a factoid in, Daughter’s XJ is a 2WD, Chrysler 8.25, 3.55. I have a 4x Dana 44, 3.55.

Please mention how many miles the 91 motor has on it.

There are many things that can cause loss of power, so I wouldn't jump directly to rebuild until those things are discussed/covered. If you have not performed a compression test, then certainly that is a good place to start.

212 K.

And I have two engines! I dawned on me as I think about this. I could test the same things on both engines.

From the time I was driving in the hills in the 91’, I suspected that the engine is not producing full power. But I never would have known until i drove this second XJ.

The 91’ is smooth. Always starts. Doesn’t die. Doesn’t sputter, smoke/burn oil, backfire or miss.

Verify that the catalytic converter isn't clogged up. A shop, a vacuum test, or even just loosen the header pipe bolts, or pull an o2 sensor.(those last two could kill you with monoxide and/or make a fire BTW)

Got it. That is actually an item on the “to replace” list. Have a new CC (and muffler) in hand.

Thank you!

A compression test is the best way to tell the overall health of an engine. Loss of power can be caused by a number of things like clogged air filter, fuel filter or cat, worn out injectors, or ignition system (plugs, wires, distributor, ignition coil), bad sensors, or a stretched timing chain.

I'd expect excessive smoke and oil consumption with rings/cylinder problems. If you relieve back pressure from a restricted exhaust, you will know immediately!
