I know on my 98xj that my temp always sits just a pinch before 210 or at 210. With the a/c on and the aux.fan on it still sits at 210. My jeep has a fact. seperate trans. cooler on the lower bottom. Thought about a 180 stat but well keep the 195 for now.

also, i know it will be suggested so i will go on and ask: where can i find any aftermarket temp gauge (rather than the idiot light) to go in place of the temp sending unit. i got one at advanced but the probe is too large of the hole. is there something out there that will fit or will i have to mock something else up?

thanks
Quick question for you (and anyone else who's had a blown head gasket/cracked head): Can you have a blown gasket or cracked head without noticing a substantial difference in power/performance? I've been battling an overheating issue for about a month, and have replaced almost every component of the cooling system. Thanks.

Yes you can. Had an s10 with a cracked head gasket. Never smoked or leaked coolent in the oil or oil in the coolent. Just noticed that after a while coolent was slowly leaving the overflow so i did a leak down test and was watching the dial slowly go down after sitting for about 5mins. Pulled the head and replaced the gasket and all was good. Truck never ran hot or anything, just slowly burnt coolent.

Good grief. Such controversy over temperatures. Almost as bad as oil.

If I may suggest, go to http://ferrarichat.com/forum/faq.php?faq=haas_articles

Somebody on this list pointed me to this Ferrari forum and this discussion of oil but I don't remember who.

Dr. Ali Haas has written a comprehensive discussion of OIL and in it he also addresses operating temperatures and their effect on oil at various RPM vis a' vis his Ferrari and other cars in his collection including a Supra. Very good stuff. This guy has been studying oil all his adult life AND he's hooked up with the engineering community at the oil companies and OEMs. It is, of course, up to each individual whether you agree with his research. I do...but that's just me.

As for temperature, I have learned that the thermostat is opening and closing whenever the coolant temperature passing by trips it to open or close. I never thought this happened - I thought once it opened is stayed that way until shutdown.

As for the XJ, like (all) car engines, according to Haas) it is designed to run at 212 degrees. This gives the engineers a baseline index to calculate expansion of the various components (rings, pistons, bearings, block) and predict tolerances, etc. So, keeping your engine near that baseline is Good. If you're not there, some work on the cooling system is in order.

But, making changes that alter what the factory called for is risky...unless you have made OTHER changes that necessitate a change in cooling system approach.

As for California, only God knows what is up out there.

Mine too, I guess they don't all have them, does that mean we have the tow package?

What does the factory tow package consist of?

Ive owned a 01 that turned the electric fan on when the A/C compressor engaged. Was annoying, and like my other XJz, I would unplug it in the cooler months when the A/C wasnt being used. Yah, the refrigerant oils werent being circulated, but not worried. What was the original question? oh, yah, overheating? If you have a properly opperating Water pump, thermostat, FULL Flowing Radiator, and mechanical fan clutch,... oh and no leaks,...and head gasket is all good,.....then your jeep shouldnt ever overheat. Even in 110degree heat, going uphill, with the crappy and rare 1 row manual trannied XJ radiator, heavily loaded, hauliin A$$! Sounds to me like your radiator needs a roddin out, or maby a slightly blown head gaskets pushin exhaust into the coolant. I hope its not the latter.

Yah, Ace, get a coolant and exhaust test done to see if there is exhaust in your coolant and coolant in the exhaust. Most major dealerships have the equipment to do this. Expensive. I would watch them do it if i were you. I had this done to my

mine hit 240 this weekend..it jumped from 210 to 240 on a hill climb. i had to bump a rock and go up this hill where these other rigs dug out some good size ruts. after that incident, ive decided to do a revamp on my cooling system. ive decided to order a 3 row rad, got a 195 degree fail safe thermostat, gonna do some e-fan shopping and replace the hoses and pray that it does the trick. i have my stock e-fan hooked up to a switch and relay so i can turn it on at all times. its 100 degrees out today and humid as hell and it goes about a pube above 210. but still would like to be able to keep it around there when wheeling.

yeah it was a mechanical temp gauge. went to Pep-Boys to get an electrical type gauge, but the thread is BARELY different. the new gauge is an 1/8" NPT when the jeep coolant sensor is not. i tempted to just use the gauge i found, unless you have any suggestions are where i can find one that will fit the jeep with no problems.

Exactly. The engine is designed to run at 200 degrees. Running it at 180 is robbing power and or gas mileage. That's why it's a 'recommended' running temperature. If the thermostat is working properly, and you are overheating, you have other problem(s).

now i was having some over heating issues, i solved it and my 95 cherokee's temp gadge stays in the middle.

i flushed out the cooling system like 7 times, put a 50/50mix in it.
-new water pump
-160 degree thermostat
-6ft pound radiator cap on it also a new stock radiator
-all new cooling lines
-heater control valve
and the thing runs like a dream even off road in thick mud

Hahahaaaaaa. Never heard that before... it's great!

So I run right at 210 all the time. Would it be beneficial to get a 195 t-stat and the taurus dual fans? Would it make a noticeable difference? This is my first jeep, and maybe i'm just not used to the high operating temp, but when I see that gauge go over 200, it scares me.
