Replacing lifters?
I have a tick at start up that goes away like most 4.0. I'm replacing head should I replace lifters too? What's a good brand to use?

I haven't looked into it, but if Clevite or Melling or Sealed Power are available they all make good parts. Could just be oil varnish built up on your lifters though, but if the heads already off it wouldn't hurt to replace them.

Are you pulling the head just for this? Easier to just pull the pushrods and clean them out with Berryman's carb cleaner spray. When you reinstall put another spritz in to weep into the lifters.
If you are pulling the head for something else, its a good time to replace the lifters and pushrods and rockers and a bunch of other things, dunno if its necessary though unless you have some evidence

Running a quart of ATF in the engine for 50 miles or so usually takes care of any ticking also. It's basically 100% detergent, so it eats away any sludge build up or varnish on things like lifters, pushrods, etc.

I'm replacing head because it's a 2001 with weak casting. I've had a head off an 04 grand Cherokee for a while now a figured I just put it on. It has TUPY on it and only has about 30k on it. Only have tick and start up and goes away after a minute or so.

Lifters size
Ok, so I got a new melling Lifter and compared it to my old one and it's shorter by 1.3mm. about as thick as a dime. I have a remanufactured head, I wonder if it has been resurfaced to that much..

DONT DO IT!!!!
I have an 01 that also needed a new head and I took my head off and said well I might as well replace the lifters since I have a lifter tick. Put it all back together and within 10 miles it turns into a bad knock, I just took her back apart this week and one lifter has a hole in the bottom and the other is shaved off at a steep angle. I 100% would not replace them unless you’re replacing your cam too. I’m now doing a whole engine rebuild because new lifters basically destroyed my cam. This is all very recent. I just remove my engine an hour ago to get it rebuilt. So I hope you don’t just replace the lifter if you do I wish you luck.
