How do I remove paint from fender flares

My step father just bought a 2001 Wrangler (Yes, I know it's not an XJ). The previous owner used cheap spray paint to re-blacken the factory fender flares after they faded to a light gray. We don't know how the previous owner prepped the flares before they were painted but paint is now scratching off (I can actually scrape it off with my fingernail in some places). We would like to repaint the flares using Krylon Fusion Paint for plastic but we need to get the old paint off first. I'm worried if we just spray over the old paint the new paint will come off too. Has anyone dealt with this problem before? If so what did you do to get the old paint off.

If its just spray paint you can wipe it off with lacquer thinner

try wrangler forum? haha, just messin... maybe some light sanding too?

We don't want to sand them unless absolutely necessary because they are slightly texured which makes sanding marks harder to conceal.

mmm. fair enough... well, sand blasting if youve got a steady hand :) but usuing a good quality paint stripper should do it..

If you want them black use Rust-Oleum bed liner spray on them after removing the crap paint and suffing them with a scotchbrite pad. The Rust-Oleum has a grainy texture and looks great once it dries. I did my ZJs plastic cladding and it looks 100% better than the old ashy grey.
