im buying axels from a buddy but he never got to put them in there d44 and

Either pull the cover and count the teeth, or turn one axle and count rotation of the drive shaft. Either method is super easy since they're out of the vehicle

Don't think that's what he's talking about.
Take them to somebody that knows how to install ring and pinions, have them check the backlash, and the gearmesh.

Grab through yoke and see how much it twists side to side before it clunks againt the ring,should be well under a 1/4 of play
