how can I tell if a AW4/242 como is a '96 ?

So I can purchase a AW4/242 combo that came out of a working vehicle

The seller "thinks" it was '96, which would be perfect for me, having 3

Is there any way to tel, such as via serial num, date stamp/code, or some other method, what year it likely came out of?

guy wants $350 for an AW4/242, believed to be out of a '96, it was running he had been wrecking it slowly, seems like fair value

I must maintain discipline on spare parts, a dude wanted $100 for a 242 that need a rebuild...I apologetically offered $30, he wanted $70

he sounded a bit miffed, well unfortunately he can take 30, or insert it
